Digital Voice (IP based) telephone networks and PERS

Q: What is our strategy to support non-standard voice networks - (Digital voice over Non-Managed Facilities Voice Networks).

A: Broadband IP based telephone service providers are available in the North American market.  Some name brands such as Vonage service, or Magic Jack are notable - where the telephone signal uses the underlying internet service provider's connection.  Quality of Service (QOS) is variable - since the provider does not own the network.

Some of these service providers claim their telephone service allows for certain digital communcations, such as fax support … but the real key would be to contact them to determine if they support security alarm panel communications.

Finally, their FAQ section should address whether they deploy a battery-backup provision for their phone service.  The PERS provider who is writing a contract for a subscriber on these networks should be aware of this, because if the power goes out – this subscriber may be out-of-luck.
